Twenty years ago, when Julie Kauffman and her husband, Lynn, had young children, Julie wanted more flexibility in the work place. She began working at Kennedy and Coe and enjoyed being able to focus on her career as a CPA and also spend summers with her children. Now she manages the firm’s construction group and has spent the last two decades making business partnerships with owners, CFO’s and contractors in the building industry.

Currently, Julie helps construction companies regarding audits, financial statements, tax work and succession planning. She also consults on bonding, job costing and strategic planning and has helped companies with nexus, or multi-state tax issues. Julie also pays annual membership dues to several construction industry associations in order to keep up with issues facing general and state contractors.

Working at Kennedy and Coe requires getting to know a client much better than by simply filling out a tax return. Her one-on-one visits with owners ensure Julie understands their purpose and goals in business. She remembers asking a client what he liked most about owning a business. His answer was seeing new pickups in the employee parking lot and realizing he provided a way for staff to acquire them.

Julie and Lynn have two adult children, Jennifer and Tyler. A few years ago, the Kauffman’s enjoyed a vacation to the British Virgin Islands where they and two other couples rented a sail boat, hopping from island to island. This kind of trip meant no television, cell phones or internet, only a captain who offered unique political views and the chance to eat incredible food, including the best meal of her life – grilled lobster. Julie hopes to take another trip like this soon and is thankful for the manageable work schedule from Kennedy and Coe that would allow her to do so.
