Farm Bill Passes Narrowly in the House Today

The House passed the farm bill today (following its failed efforts to garner enough votes in May).  In a vote of 213-211, the House narrowly approved its version of the 2018 Farm Bill.  It received no Democratic votes, primarily due to opposition to certain provisions contained in the Nutrition Title (Food Stamps).

Up Next in the Senate, And Beyond

As you may recall, the Senate Ag Committee advanced a bipartisan bill last week (by a 20-1 vote).  The bill is expected on the Senate floor next week, and there are no blatant oppositions which would hinder its passage.  Assuming it passes, both chambers will appoint conferees to begin hashing out the differences in the bills.

Given the bipartisan nature of the Senate bill and the acrimony surrounding the House bill, it is likely that the final package will look very similar to the Senate’s approach.  It also is expected that they will strive to complete this work and get it onto President Trump’s desk well before the upcoming election.
