Knowing the intricacies of tax, Tom outlines scenarios to compare options and their risk levels for business owners to make more-informed decisions. As an attorney with incredible depth in the legalities of tax treatment, he is frequently brought in by others at K·Coe Isom to advise on transactions that include buy/sell arrangements; adding new business partners or getting an owner out of the business; land purchases, sales or swaps; pension and fringe benefit plans; and ownership restructuring.
Tom leads K·Coe Isom’s tax research team, guiding the firm in standards and appropriate procedures under constantly changing circumstances and tax laws. He’s passionate about digging deep into law changes and addresses challenges to his knowledge with vigor. He eagerly fields IRS questions or appeals representing both the firm and the firm’s clients when inquiries are made.
Some of Tom’s recent projects include:
From an ag community in Randolph, Nebraska, Tom has personally plowed land and he married a farm girl who “farms” their one-and-a-half-acre city plot. He relates to farming even though he serves non-ag businesses, as well. Immediately upon finishing law school he joined the firm where he collaborates with others in the firm to help businesses organize, transfer, and protect assets, and plan for their futures while limiting tax consequences. Tom always likes his work, and feels fortunate to be in a role where he gets to figure out how to make things work well for people.
